Purpose:
This course is designed to give individuals an Introduction to Building Operations and the materials required to challenge the 5th class Power Engineering ABSA exam.
The course is broken down into two sections. The first section being the Introduction to Building Safety and the second section dealing with the bulk of the 5th class Power Engineering Syllabus.
Length:
The two courses will run over a fourteen-week period. The Introduction course will be taught over 30 hours and the 5th class part of the course will be taught over 120 hours. Classes will be taught on Monday, and Wednesday evenings for three hours as well as nine Saturdays for six hours. Total course hour are 150 hours.
Structure:
The courses are broken down into sections matching BOMA's Introduction to Building Operations and the ABSA syllabus. The instructors will go over course materials in a classroom environment as well as some tours of building facilities. The students will be required to complete home assignments within allotted time frames. The pass mark for this course is 65%.
Introduction Course:
This course will cover the following topics: Interpersonal, Computer, Administrative, Facility and Process Equipment, Rotating Equipment, Facility Maintenance and Construction, as well as other basic building concepts.
5th Class Course:
This course will cover the following topics: Act and Codes, Applied Science, Welding and Plumbing, Pumps, Piping and Valves, Boiler Details, Boiler Fittings, Fuels and Combustion, Boiler Controls, Boiler operation, maintenance and water treatment, Heating Systems and Human Comfort, Refrigeration and Air conditioning; Systems and Auxiliaries, Refrigeration and Air conditioning Controls, Air Compression, Electricity.
The students will also have to complete competencies before they successfully complete this program.
Special Sitting:
We will arrange a special ABSA sitting for the 5th Class exam.
