Technological concerns

Someone asked me about "COR Certification" and what it means. The following is a description.

The Alberta Certificate of Recognition program is a health & safety partnership with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety and industry. The COR is voluntary program that is widely used as a prequalification standard. A company who successfully meets the program minimum requirements becomes COR registered in the province.

To meet COR requirements a company must have a basic health & safety program in place and be active in documentation, reporting, inspections, accident reduction, toolbox meetings, employee training, housekeeping, and must have an external audit completed with a passing mark. Internal audits are also required yearly.

Education is also a part of the COR certification. Each company must have at least one currently employed individual who has completed and passed the following courses:

Prime Contractor WHMIS Train the Trainer Leadership for Safety Excellence Auditor training Course Principles of Health & Safety Management.

The entire program is overseen by the Alberta Construction and Safety Association. They have offices in Calgary and Edmonton.

In reference to Saskatchewan, they are now just starting to see the requirement to be COR certified as customers are requesting it. They are mirroring Alberta’s program.

BC has stricter guidelines yet, and do not have a COR program. However all firms are required to have similar procedures and programs in place.
