New Pressure Welders Regulations in Force October 1, 2002
The new Pressure Welders Regulation (AR 169/2002) establishes a new certificate of competency for welding examiners,
eliminates the Grade A Pressure Welder Certificate of Competency and makes several minor changes to other existing
requirements.
A Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency authorizes the holder to conduct performance qualification tests on behalf
of a testing organization while employed by that testing organization.
To take a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency examination, a candidate must meet at least one of the
qualifications in the Welding Examiner Syllabus.
The eligibility requirements are:
P. Eng. with a B. Sc. In Metallurgy, Welding, or Mechanical Engineering, or
First Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency, or
CET with a Diploma in Materials or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or
Diploma in Welding Engineering Technology, or
Grade “A” or “B” Pressure Welder, or
CSA W178.2 Welding Inspector Level III, or
Safety Codes Officer – Boiler Discipline, or
Designated Welder Testing Personnel, or
Other Equivalent Qualification
The examination consists of four (4) papers. To take a Welding Examiner certificate of Competency examination, a
candidate may apply to ABSA using Application Form AB-92. The examination will be available January 2003.
A person authorized under a testing organization’s quality control program to conduct performance qualification tests as
of October 1, 2002 may apply for a Welding Examiner Certificate of Competency without examination before September 30,
2003 using Application Form AB-72.
Effective October 1, 2003, all ABSA authorized testing organizations will be required to employ one or more welding
examiners to conduct performance qualification tests.
Further information about the ABSA Pressure Welder and Welding Examiner Certification programs will be posted on
ABSA’s web site in the near future. For Pressure Welder and Welding Examiner competency testing and examination,
